Special Lecture on “Japan’s Ocean Policy in the context of the Free & Open Indo-Pacific Strategy” co-hosted by The Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka and the Department of International Relations, University of Colombo.
Event Summary
On 28th September 2018 the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka and the Department of International Relations, University of Colombo jointly organized a special lecture titled “Japan’s Ocean Policy in the context of the Free & Open Indo-Pacific Strategy”, followed by the Panel Discussion on “Maritime Security Regime” at M.B. Ariyapala Auditorium, Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo. Guest lecturer from Japan, Professor Atsuko Kanehara of Sophia University (also a Councilor of Advisory Council for the National Headquarters for Ocean Policy of Japan) introduced Japan’s Ocean Policy in the context of the Free & Open Indo-Pacific Strategy in the key-note speech.

About Free and Indo Pacific Strategy
A concept aiming to enhance stability and social/ economic development in Indo-Pacific area with improvement of the connectivity between Asia and Africa region.
It consists of three core components; (1) the freedom of navigation, as well as the rule of law (2) promoting regional connectivity through establishing facilities related to transportation such as ports, harbors and roads to enhance economic prosperity (3) addressing obstacles to social/ economic developments such as natural disasters, piracy, etc.
