1 Short-Term Stay

  A stay of up to 90 days for Tourism, Business, attending conference, visiting friends/relatives, etc., that does not include remunerative activities.
 
(1) For Nationals including Sri Lanka and Maldives

Single Entry Visa
Generally Single Entry Visa is issued at the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka. Please click here for more details and the required documents.
The validity of a visa is 3 months from the day of issuance. The validity period cannot be extended.
 
Multiple Entry Visa
Embassy may issue Multiple Entry Visa for the applicant with business activities which can meet our requirement. In this regard, the applicant is required to provide us the explanation letter with specific reasons. The reason must be also included in the invitation letter from the Japanese guarantor.
 
In addition to the List of Basic Documents (MOFA HP) , following documents must be submitted by the applicant.
-Birth Certificate (original) together with its A4 sized photocopy and a certified English translation of the same.
-Marriage Certificate (for married applicants) (original) together with its A4 sized photocopy and a certified English translation of the same.
-Original National ID card together with its A4 sized photocopy and a certified English translation of the same.

2 Work or Long-Term Stay

A stay during which the applicant performs remunerative work (professor, journalist, researcher, engineer etc.) in Japan or a stay of over 90 days (student, trainee, etc.) in Japan. Please click here for more details.
The Certificate of Eligibility issued by the Immigration Bureau of Japan must be submitted to apply this category.

Necessary documents are as follows.
-Passport
-Visa Application Form
-Photo (4.5cm x 3.5cm with white background, taken within six months)
- Certificate of Eligibility (original) together with its A4 sized photocopy
-Birth Certificate (original) together with its A4 sized photocopy and a certified English translation of the same.
-Marriage Certificate (for married applicants) (original) together with its A4 sized photocopy and a certified English translation of the same.
-Original National ID card together with its A4 sized photocopy and a certified English translation of the same.
-Travel itinerary or schedule/program in Japan including the hotel booking confirmation and ticket confirmation issued by the airline agent


 
 

3 Visa for Medical Stay

Visa for “Medical Stay” is a visa issued to foreign patients wishing to visit Japan for medical purposes (including medical check-ups). The visa is issued to their accompanying person(s) as well if necessary and as needed. Please click here for more details.

Applicants must get the confirmation from the medical institution by the qualified guarantor agency. Consultation report which is issued by medical institution as well as the guarantor letter and treatment schedule by the qualified guarantor agency may be requested.

Additionally recommendation letter from a Sri Lankan local doctor with the previous medical reports is required.

If the treatment period requires staying more than 90 days, please apply with the Certificate of Eligibility.



 
 

4 Diplomatic and Official

Diplomatic or Official passport holders travelling on diplomatic/official purposes are entitled to apply in this category. For the short-term stay, please refer to the list below or inquire individually from the Embassy.
Necessary documents are as follows.

-Diplomatic/ Official passport
-Visa Application Form
-Photo (4.5cm x 3.5cm with white background, taken within six months)
-Note Verbal issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Diplomatic Missions
-Letter issued by JICA, if applicant is JICA trainee
-Travel itinerary or schedule/program in Japan
-Accommodation(Hotel confirmation)

5 Transit

Transit Visa is issued when the purpose of travel to Japan is only for transit on the way to/from other countries. Activities are limited to sightseeing, leisure and rest. If the purpose is commercial or visiting friends/relatives in Japan, please apply Short-Term Visa.
Necessary documents for transit visa are as follows.

   - Valid passport with a valid visa of the final destination
   - Visa Application Form
   - Photo (4.5cm x 3.5cm with white background, taken within six months)
   - Birth Certificate (original) together with its A4 sized photocopy and a certified English translation of the same.
   - Marriage Certificate (for married applicants) (original) together with its A4 sized photocopy and a certified English translation of the same.
   - Original National ID card together with its A4 sized photocopy and a certified English translation of the same.
   - Travel itinerary or schedule/program in Japan including the hotel booking confirmation and ticket confirmation issued by the airline agent
   - Original Bank statement of deposit balance together with its A4 sized photocopy
