November 30, 2017
A Japanese Film Festival, organized by the Embassy of Japan was held in Jaffna on 28th and 29th November 2017. Two Japanese films “Thermae Romae” and “Always- Sunset on Third Street” were screened at the Public Library of Jaffna and the University of Jaffna respectively.
“Thermae Romae” is a fantasy comedy, which has won both the Manga Taisho (cartoon grand prize) and the Tezuka Osamu cultural prize for best short work. The story is a Roman spa architecture time- hopping between his era and the modern Japan to be amazed and inspired by unique spa features of modern Japan.
“Always- Sunset on Third Street” is an emotional movie that depicts the era, when Japan was in high economic growth while preparing to host Olympic Games in 1964.
The two recent films, which were screened for the first time in Jaffna, entertained audiences of hundreds of spectators, from Jaffna.
This is just a latest example and a part of ongoing efforts by the Embassy of Japan to promote greater understanding of Japan in Sri Lanka.
