Long-awaited “Anuradhapura North Water Supply Project Phase 1” Completed

On 15th February, H. E. MIZUKOSHI Hideaki, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, attended the completion ceremony of the long-awaited Loan Project, "Anuradhapura North Water Supply Project Phase 1," funded by the Government of Japan, in the esteemed presence of H. E. Ranil Wickremesinghe, President of Sri Lanka, Hon. Jeevan Thondaman, Minister of Water Supply and Estate Infrastructure Development, Hon. Shehan Semasinghe, State Minister of Finance, Hon. Shasheendra Rajapaksa, State Minister of Irrigation and Water Supply, Hon. Mahipala Herath, Governor of North Central Province at Anuradhapura. The ceremony coincided with the visit by Dr. TANAKA Akihiko, President of JICA, to Sri Lanka, and his presence at the ceremony made the occasion even more memorable.

This is a Loan Project worth approximately 5.2 billion Japanese Yen (about 35 million UDS at current rates) initiated in 2013 that aims to contribute to providing constant safe water to 61,000 people in Anuradhapura, who have been afflicted with chronic fluorosis and kidney disease for a long time. This project will be the foundation for the development of agriculture and industry as well as the improvement of the quality of life in Anuradhapura.

Ambassador Mizukoshi warmly congratulated the completion of this milestone project and expressed his deepest appreciation to Hon. President and other dignitaries, who have made great dedication and tremendous efforts in making this project a great success, even in the challenges of pandemics and economic crises. He further emphasized that the completion of this project would be the precursor to successful Sri Lanka's revitalization and usher in its further development in the years to come. He also expressed sincere hope that this project will contribute to further solidifying our bilateral bond between Japan and Sri Lanka, committing to continue to stand by Sri Lanka at all times.
