Japan to Extend its Support for Improving Palliative Care Centre for Children with Cancer

On the 13th of March 2024, His Excellency Mr. MIZUKOSHI Hideaki, Ambassador of Japan, signed the grant contract of the project under the scheme of “Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP)”, with Dr Lanka Jayasuriya Dissanayake, Chairperson of Indira Cancer Trust.
The Government of Japan has provided a total sum of USD 51,675 (approx. Rs. 16 million) through the GGP to Indira Cancer Trust to establish a healing garden at their palliative care centre “SUWA ARANA” at Maharagama.
The Government of Japan has supported 320 projects through the GGP, for which more than USD 58.4 million has been allocated since 1989.
Ambassador Mizukoshi emphasized that the project is intricately tied to Japan's Official Development Assistance policy, focusing on human security to advance the nation and community building though empowerment and protection of individuals to live happily and in dignity, free from fear and want. Additionally, he committed to provide assistance aligned with the policy for the long-term stability and prosperity of Sri Lanka.
Commenting on receiving this grant, Dr Lanka Jayasuriya Dissanayake:
“We are deeply grateful for the support of the Japanese Embassy in making our Healing Facility vision a reality. This project represents a vital component of our holistic approach to pediatric palliative care, enhancing the quality of life for the young patients under our care.”
This collaboration with the Japanese Embassy underscores a shared commitment to enhancing the well-being of children facing serious illnesses. The generous grant provided by the Japanese Embassy will play a pivotal role in creating a serene and therapeutic environment within our ‘SUWA ARANA’ Pediatric Palliative Centre.
The outdoor facility project aims to provide a sanctuary for young patients and their families, fostering a space of tranquility and solace amidst challenging times. Through thoughtful landscaping and design, the garden will be tailored to meet the unique needs of pediatric patients, offering a supportive and uplifting atmosphere. We look forward to the positive impact that the Healing Garden will have on the lives of pediatric patients and their families, thanks to the support and generosity of the Japanese Embassy.
