Ambassador MIZUKOSHI Hideaki Completes Tenure in Sri Lanka: Strengthening Bilateral Ties During Challenging Times

H.E. Mr. MIZUKOSHI Hideaki, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, will complete his tenure and depart for his new assignment in Sweden on 24th October 2024. Ambassador MIZUKOSHI, who assumed office in November 2021, has contributed significantly to the bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Japan during a period marked by notable challenges in Sri Lanka.
 
During his tenure, Ambassador MIZUKOSHI worked with three different Sri Lankan administrations—those of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, and the current President, H.E. Mr. Anura Kumara Dissanayake—adapting to the shifting political landscape while continuing to support cooperation between the two nations. His efforts played a crucial role in Japan's assistance to Sri Lanka during the COVID-19 pandemic, the economic crisis, and the ensuing humanitarian and economic challenges. Japan’s involvement in debt restructuring negotiations and the resumption of key development projects highlighted the long-term commitment to Sri Lanka’s recovery.

 

At a farewell reception held on 21st October, Foreign Minister Hon. Vijitha Herath and other dignitaries expressed their appreciation for Ambassador MIZUKOSHI's efforts to advance relations between Japan and Sri Lanka. Leaders from various political parties, former presidents, and foreign envoys attended the event, underscoring the broad support for his work.

 
Throughout his time in Sri Lanka, Ambassador MIZUKOSHI built strong relationships with the local community, engaging with Sri Lankans from all walks of life. His wife, Mrs. MIZUKOSHI Mariko, also contributed to fostering ties, particularly through her involvement with local women’s groups, leaving a meaningful impact on the people they connected with.

As he prepared to leave, Ambassador MIZUKOSHI reflected on his deep connection with Sri Lanka. “When I came to Sri Lanka, no Sri Lankan knew me. Now, when I go jogging in the morning, people on the street come up to me and thank me for what Japan has done for Sri Lanka's economy. These are the moments when I feel the greater appreciation of Japan by the Sri Lankan people and a sense of accomplishment as a diplomat.”
