Colombo, Sri Lanka – December 1, 2024 – In response to the severe heavy rains affecting Sri Lanka, the Government of Japan, through its partners UNFPA and JICA, is providing vital support to women in the affected communities, particularly in the Northern and Eastern provinces.

Under a project funded by the Japanese government and implemented by UNFPA, urgent life-saving 4,000 hygiene kits, equivalent to 48 million Rupees, are being distributed to women and girls, including pregnant women, to respond to their specific needs during this crisis. These kits contain essential supplies to help ensure better health, hygiene and protection in the aftermath of the flooding. In addition, under the ongoing project, UNFPA is also delivering health and protection facility enhancement and delivery of psychosocial care worth 223 million Rupees, which will help address fast recovery from the impact of flooding.
Japan International Cooperation Agency, JICA, as part of their ongoing technical assistance, has also decided to distribute 1,800 sets of hygiene goods and crucial medicines to the Manner District in the Northern Province.

The collaborative effort with UNFPA and JICA highlights Japan’s strong commitment to promptly react to the emergency situation and support vulnerable communities in Sri Lanka.
