2025/12/18

On 18th December, H.E. Mr. Akio ISOMATA, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, together with Ms. Emma Brigham, Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), visited Hon. Dr. Susil Ranasinghe, Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply, and handed over hygiene kits and related relief items.

This grant assistance, valued at USD 500,000, forms part of an emergency grant amounting to USD 2.5 million, which the Government of Japan decided on 16th December to extend to the Government of Sri Lanka in partnership with United Nations organizations, namely the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the UNICEF.

Through the UNICEF, Japan will support interventions in the areas of WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) and child protection, such as providing child-friendly spaces and psychosocial support, targeting severely affected communities in Central, Uva, Eastern, Western, and North Western Provinces.

This assistance will contribute to ensuring access to safe water and preventing the outbreak of infectious diseases through the provision of emergency water and sanitation supplies, the repair of malfunctioning water supply facilities, and the promotion of hygiene practices to prevent waterborne diseases.

Ambassador ISOMATA emphasized that this assistance will not only address the urgent needs of the affected population but will also contribute to safeguarding their health by preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
Ambassador ISOMATA further reaffirmed that Japan stands in full solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka during this challenging period.
