2026/6/12

On 11th June, the Ceremonial Opening of the Sasakawa Memorial Sri Lanka-Japan Cultural Centre, known as “Sasakawa Centre,” was held in Colombo.

Hon. Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The ceremony was also attended by Mr. Yohei SASAKAWA, Honorary Chairman of The Nippon Foundation, Japan, and H.E. Akio ISOMATA, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, as Guests of Honour.

Among the distinguished guests present were Hon. Ramalingam Chandrasekar, Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources and Hon. Dr. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs.

For over three decades, the Sasakawa Centre has stood as a distinguished emblem of Japan-Sri Lanka friendship and exchange, supporting broad activities ranging from Japanese-language classes to professional skill-up seminars.

With the bilateral relations between Japan and Sri Lanka entering a new chapter following H.E. President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka’s visit to Japan last September, the newly opened Centre will serve as a symbol of friendship as well as a hub for cultural, educational, and people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.
