Japanese-assisted Kaluwanchikudy Base Hospital complex was opened under the patronage of His Excellency, President Maithripala Sirisena and His Excellency Kenichi Suganuma, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, at Kaluwanchikudy on the 1st of February 2017.
The Government of Japan, through JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency), provided 3,935 million Japanese Yen (approximately LKR. 5,232 million) for the improvement of facilities and equipment to secondary hospitals in Sri Lanka to improve the health system and strengthen the secondary level hospitals in the country. Under this project, four secondary hospitals; Theldeniya Base Hospital, Warakapola Base Hospital, Kaluvanchykudy Base Hospital, and Galgamuwa Base Hospital were refurbished. As a result, local people of the Eastern Province have access to quality health care services. For example, Kaluwanchikudy Base Hospital is restored with a new central ward including ICU, operating theater, hospital ward with latest medical equipment, new outpatient’s ward and the mortuary for the smooth functioning of the hospital.
The Government of Japan hopes that this assistance will be effectively utilized to the welfare of the people seeking treatments, improve their health conditions and facilitate the long term development in Sri Lanka.
