On the Occasion of the National Day of Japan

  On 23rd February 2021, the Embassy of Japan in Sri Lanka celebrated the 61st Birthday of His Majesty the Emperor on a virtual platform, with the participation of the esteemed representatives of the Government of Sri Lanka, heads of the diplomatic missions and the international organizations, Japanese compatriots, and trusted friends of Sri Lanka. The national day of Japan is celebrated on 23rd February, which is the birthday of His Majesty the Emperor.
 
Upon this auspicious day, H.E. SUGIYAMA Akira, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, outlined the future course of diplomatic relationship between Japan and Sri Lanka, with particular emphasis on the spirit of solidarity in the joint combat against COVID-19, strengthening of maritime partnership and quality infrastructure, Japan’s active support for the “Vistas of Prosperity and Splendor”, promotion of trade and investment, and people-to-people contacts at all levels which is expected to make greater strides through the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games scheduled to be held in coming summer.
 
   Ambassador SUGIYAMA also stated that the year 2021 marks an important juncture in the history of diplomatic relationship between the two counties, recalling the strong support that the representative of the then Ceylon, His Excellency J.R. Jayawardene, extended for Japan’s recovery of status in the international community after the World War II at the San Francisco Peace Conference in 1951, marking the 70th anniversary this year.
 
    On behalf of the Government and people of Sri Lanka, Hon. Dinesh Gunawardena, Foreign Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, in his congratulatory message, expressed sincere and best wishes for His Majesty’s continued good health and happiness as well as for enduring success, prosperity and well-being to the people of Japan, while stating that despite the numerous challenges posed by COVID-19 pandemic, both countries have been able to realize many milestones across a number of important spheres through our joint endeavours.
