Japan’s Contributions to accelerate development in Sexual and Reproductive Health for women and youth in Sri Lanka

2021/3/29

On 29 March 2021, as part of the UNFPA’s PROMISES project supported by Japan, essential medical equipment, furniture and ICT supplies were handed over to support Ministry of Health (MOH) and 32 women and youth friendly health centers at the presence of Hon. Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle, State Minister of Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID Disease Control, Ambassador SUGIYAMA Akira, and Ms. Ritsu Nacken, Country Representative of UNFPA Sri Lanka.

Japan and Sri Lanka have been partners under the G7 Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Initiative since 2018, to help enhance women’s meaningful participation for sustainable peace and development in Sri Lanka. Japan has extended around USD 6 million so far for the Initiative through UN agencies including UN Women and UNFPA. In addition to this support, JICA extends technical cooperation, including dispatching a JICA expert on women’s empowerment to the State Ministry of Women and Child Affairs, Pre-schools and Primary Education, School Infrastructure and Education Services.
