2021/10/28

On 28th October 2021, H.E. SUGIYAMA Akira, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, presented 150 patrol motorcycles to H.E. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Presidential Secretariat Office. These motorcycles are donated by the Government of Japan to Sri Lanka Police for the country’s counter-terrorism efforts in the wake of the East Sunday terror attacks in 2019.

Among the dignitaries in attendance at the ceremony were Hon. Sarath Weerasekara, Minister of Public Security, Mr. C.D. Wickramaratne, Inspector General of Police, among others.

Under this grant aid worth JPY 1 billion (Rs. 1.7 billion), the Government of Japan has already donated anti-terrorism surveillance and investigation vehicles as well as a variety of essential equipment for enhancing counterterrorism and public security capabilities, including Mobile X-Ray Scanners, Walk Through Safety Inspection Gates, and Vehicle Chassis Safety Inspection Systems to the Sri Lanka Police and the Airport & Aviation Services Sri Lanka (AASL).

Next year will mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Sri Lanka. As a long-standing friend of Sri Lanka, Japan stands in solitary with Sri Lanka in combatting terrorism.
